Avington is 1+1/2 hours away from me & that's as far as I'll drive, so I agree with you.

These days, my limit for a day trip is about 65 miles, which on non-motorway roads fits in with the hour and a half Steve and Reidy mention. I do this about a dozen times a season, split between Sutton Bingham and Farmoor.

Any further and it'd have to be a B&B stopover or a proper fishing holiday.

A few years ago I did a return trip to Blagdon from home in a day - 90 miles plus each way on not wonderful single carriageway A-roads - for a September day's fishing. It was a long old day, I was damned tired when I got home, and I won't do so again. It's not worth risking the potential consequences of falling asleep at the wheel for the sake of a days' fishing.

Perhaps - but would I want to wake up miles from home at about 1am (or be woken by the local constabulary), with a pounding headache, mouth like the bottom of a parrot's cage and the car reeking of wet landing net ?

As far as I know John, pulling over for 40 winks ain't breaking any laws. My car always stinks of landing nets and bass bags anyway. I smoke in the car occasionally to make it smell nice.

I drive about 1 - 2 hours for a days fishing, but in a way i like it. It's nice to feel like you're going on a bit of an adventure.

The days when I would drive a couple of hundred miles are long behind me. The most I'll drive now is about 70 miles.....but the fishing has to be good for that! I like to get as much fishing as possible in to a day, so I often camp out close by and make a proper session out of it. That's especially when the Bass and Mullet are in.
