Default Absent Mayfly feeders

Hi , was wondering if anyone had ever come across this scenario? was fishing my local river Blyth (N/LAND) yesterday there was a steady hatch of mayflies , but not one rising fish ! tried everything dries ,spinners , nymphs and not one sign of a fish !! the swallows and martins were having a field day the weather was overcast with heavy showers ,i was wondering if the showers were putting the fish of ? i know they are there as i have had success all season on the same beats,
Thoughts please

cheers Bob

I had a similar scenario a few weeks ago and couldn't suss it out as they are normally relatively free rising on the beat. Spoke to a friend who had fished it a few hours before i arrived and it turns out there were a load of kids playing in the river with inflatable boats etc...
I think this must have put the fish down and i couldnt see anything feeding. Moved on to a little tiny carrier stream and had a cracking evening ni a palce far too small for an inflatable dinghy.

Bob

I have experienced a similar scenario on a brook that i fish.

Last Saturday there was a good Mayfly fish with just the odd fish rising, however the Sunday before fish were rising well to a hatch of similar density.

Is it possible that the Trout become bored with a Mayfly diet ?

cheers

Dave

It may be that with the late winter the hatch up there has just started, the trout take a while to realise that mayfly is good food ,they have been eating what are tiny in comparisson ,
I have over the years seen trout "watching " the emerging flys ,and "thinking" about taking the fly, if a normal sized (say a #14 or'16) comes over they take that, later the same day or the following day they have "made their minds up" and are taking the big fly with gusto and no hesitation.
I actually think the fish a scared to take on such a big fly initially, perhaps having seen as parr predators of that size .
Just a wee ACW ramble there !
