It seems that most of us that rave about the Furled leaders, are talking about the very limp constructions of silk( or Unithread to be more precise) from Mr Trout or Rod Dibble.
I dont Know what the advantage would be of using a nylon furled leader over just using a normal stiff tapered nylon leader.

i use unithread 6/0 for furled leaders on a 5 step taper 5ft leader i use 9/5/3 loops for 7 wt. i tried one from mono and was a bit stiff- i dont use it anymore.

there are a lot of formulae for tapers on the internet, but it is easy to experiment to find what you like. ps- i found it best to 'power furl' the two legs rather than just suspend with a weight makes them much tighter and is less risky to handle.

The American website leaderarticle.html
that shows you how to tie furled leaders by hand, using mono, recommends that you use the same B.S. line as the AFTM no. of your rod, eg, 8lb line for a #8 rod.

I made a few last year using either 2lb flurocarbon and normal mono..havent had the chance to make one with thread yet but mine from last year are still going strong. I like the fluro as you can make it a full floater, sinker or just a sink tip by either greasing/degreasing.
The mono float very high and lifts with little spray.

This helped me along with other sites, a quick google and you should find loads of info

I would suggest buying a bulk cheap spool of mono and practising as there are a few niggly bits but you will soon get the hang of it

Or you could go the easy way and but some Gudebrod braided butt nylon and simply make a tapered leder by pulling out 10 equally length strands of nylon & hey presto - braided nylon leader.
