I could get the belt fixed on the cheap, just worried that a valve or two has been damaged then it's either a new cylinder head or at worst another engine and like most people money is tight.

Browntrout62,

the season started in march, hope you have a damn fine reason not not getting out before now.

From someone who has rebuilt many engines (mainly motorcycle) £500 might be a good estimate or it might be bad. Its all down to lady luck and what the engine was doing at the time. Some engines - ford 1.3 lean burn, won't crush valves cos when the exhaust valve is open and a piston is at top dead centre there is enough clearence, but by far and away most engines will crush valves, bend cams etc. Most run of the mill mechanics will know how to repair / replace a top end, its not difficult but it is time consuming and you dont know what youl find until you get the head off. You could spend 4 hour hours at £30 an hour pulling the thing to bits to find the shock has taken out the big end too (crankshaft). Depending on the model of car its often cheaper and safer (wear on other parts)to put a used engine in.
What make / model / year of car is it and where are you?
If your local to Barnoldswick i'll give you a hand for free.

Best of luck
Rob

Thanks for the offer mate but I live up near Newcastle upon tyne. I have a Renault Megan Seanic 1.4 16 valves, I was doing about 20 miles an hour as I had just come off a roundabout and it just died no power, no warning and no bangs so I'm hopping it's just the belt but knowing my luck a replacement engine is needed. I should know tomorrow as one of the lads from work is comming over to help me.

well cylinder head replacement needed, took the rocker head off and half the valves knackered.
