Default River fishing near Belfast, N Ireland

I will be staying near Belfast for a few days in September. If anyone has any suggestions on suitable locations for river fly fishing for trout and any info on availability of day tickets, I would be very grateful.

There are many rivers around the area..trout or salmon. If you're willing to travel a few extra miles I would certainly recommend the River Agivey for both trout and salmon. The Rivers international will be here next Summer.

Check out the website below for more information.

To be honest there isn't that much river brown trout fishing near Belfast- Best is the River Maine in Ballymena which would be about 30mins away. You also have the chance of a salmon or dollaghan (migratory brown trout from Lough Neagh) if you are fishing it.

Thanks for the info.

Can you give me any information about licences - I assume them Environment Agency game licence is not valid in N Ireland. I found a site that refers to both permits and licences, so I am confused!

You'll just need a rod licence (not a permit) which you can get fromBraddells fishing shop in Belfast itself. Can get a short term one so it's cheap!

Have a look at this

Home Page- A Selection of Angling Waters in Northern Ireland

I had a walk around Hillsbrough lake last week end. Its not suitable for fly fishing and there were lots of dog walkers and dogs swimming in the lake.

You need to check out the various venues to make sure they are suitable.

Where abouts near Belfast are you staying? If your close by there are plenty of places in Fermangh to go to and the Drowes in Donegal is legendary

25 mins south will take you to the upper Bann around Banbridge which has some fantsatic fishing. DCAL rod license and then a permit (day ticket) for the river which I think is still £5.
