Default Why do trout jump

Surely trout must expell alot of energy juming for flies... so why do it? What are they jumping for?

if you ask me thats a rather out there question,

imo they could be trying to shed lice and not always jumping for food

They very rarely jump for food. Ive only seen them do that in Mayfly time, and perhaps after the odd low flying damsel!

Mainly it's to dislodge an irritation, usually lice. although there is a train of thought that trout sometimes jump for no reason other than pleasure.

There are other reasons why they jump, but the main one is to rid themselves of Argulus, a fish louse. This is mainly active in the warmer months.

they jump when they are happy or to avoid being eaten or maybe they just forget to stop at the surface sometimes, also adjusting swimbladders or irritation(they cant scratch) or maybe just showing off.

I've had trout, mainly small brownies, leap clear of the water to take size 20 Griffiths Gnats!
