Default Why so many wind knots ??

I'm only a beginer , but why do I get so many wind knots in my leader ?

I'm also constantly catching my my line , especially on the loop attaching leader to fly line ??

Any advice would be grately appreciated?

regards

Dave

I'd like to know the same thing, I expect it's our rubbish casting technique or not having a super duper expensive rod.

Look forward to the replies.

Well, they certainly don't stop happening I can tell you that.

You should ask this on the casting section as well. What you will find is that as your natural timing improves you will get less crumpled presentations. It is then that the leader just simply winds around or through itself and hey presto a wind knot.

I fish a wild and over grown little stream and I get the same effect when i catch a weed with my hook and the presentation or the line gets coiled back on itself.

Also fishing with light lines, if it is gusty, means the occasional wrap around.

In short, the better you cast the less you get. Patience and practice.

I hate to say this Dave, what you need is some casting instruction, There is no such a thing as wind knots, just an excuse for bad casting, no matter what anyone can say and advise you on this forum, it wont do you any good, get in touch with a casting instructor, or, get one of your mates to go out with you and hopefully he will be able to put you right on a few things, talking about it is one thing, doing it is the way to go, hope this helps in some small way, keep at it Dave, it all comes together in the end.

Without actually seeing you cast it's hard to diagnose what the exact problem is but I suspect you have a tailing loop. A casting instructor would sort this out for you pretty quickly.

A good way of preventing the leader catching on the knot where the leader is attached to the braided loop/flyline is to leave the tag end of your knot long.

I usually leave mine a couple of inches long as the fish won't notice it that high up your leader and then there's nothing for your leader to catch on.

I do not follow this arguement, my peers consider me "a good caster" & on occasion after a long days fishing I get the "odd wind knot"
Whether it is a lapse in my casting concentration I do not know but the odd knot or tangle I do get but so does everyone do they not? Certainly more noticable on blustery condition but still days as well can be trying. Think it is just the nature of the beast.
I suspect the original poster would benefit from a few lessons though. Certainly would not do any harm.

I had this problem when i first started and i was told 2 slow the cast down and put the power in late when fishing in the wind. But in the end you will get it right and you will not think about it. I still get wind knots But that's part of fishing and you will get better the more you cast in different condition
and for the leader catching on the loop that usually happens when you rush your cast so slow it down a little and take your time
It worked for me so hope this helps

You are bending your wrist. As a beginner you need to stop that. When you have been fishing for a while you can bring your wrist in a little but for now stuff the butt of the rod in your shirt cuff and your wrist will splint. You don't need lessons to cast a fly well.

Sounds like you've got a bad dose of the tailing loops. You need to have a look at your casting. My advice is to get a lesson or two with a qualified instructor; it'll make fishing much more pleasurable.
