Default What Salmon flies?

Hi all I have bought my first season ticket for the Nith (upper nithsdale) and plan, when we get water,to concentrate on fly fishing. Im not sure what flies to use and what size. I now through summer small dark flies and when the colder weather comes in large and bright normally do. I need names of flies and sizes to give me confidence and a bit of a chance.
Thanks in advance for your answers and help.

Looking forward to the answers you get to your question. It's been truly amazing how adaptable the Atlantic Salmon flies have been for Steelhead Fishing.

Default Hello Fredaevans

Hello
You are a long way away but good to have your interest. Talking about Stealheads I had a great time 2 years ago when fishing the Kenai river in Alaska with a friend we were fishing for rainbows from a drift boat with a sight indicator and an orange bead and had a few cracking stealheads, awsome fish.

Default Darned interesting your comment about Steelhead and the Kenai River.

The Kenai is well know for its Salmon runs and trout, but don't recall reading about Steelhead in that mix. But would make sense given Steelhead are 'just' anadromous (sp?) trout. DNA wise there's no difference between the two.

Three patterns I use with great success are the Flamethrower, The Cascade, Alley's Shrimp and Willie Gunn. The closer you are to the river mouth (salt) the more effective they become.

Hi Grayling,
I have fished mid nithsdale for getting on 30 years.
My most succesful salmon fly has been a yellow gary dog, size 8 long shank treble or double, followed by a more recent pattern, the ally gowans version of the cascade.
hot on the cascades heels is a slver stoats tail with green butt, rather than golden pheasant crest, next would be a comet but fished on 1.5 inch waddington shank.
have had success on munros killer or willie gunn, and black and yellow on same waddington size.
a very famous fly on nith is brown turkey, which still works, but you will probs have to get them made for you.
have found over the years that fly size aint that important on nith, is depth and speed as it crosses current, but they do love a fly with a touch of silver or yellow through it!
regards
bert
