Default Destination luggage that can take 10' rods??

All,

I am hoping someone may be able to point me in the direction of a suitcase/destination bag that can take one or two 10' 3 or 4 piece rods.

Whilst I would dearly love to have the overdraft facility to procure a G Loomis bag at a couple hundred smackeroos... I think I will pass on that.

I am sure I saw one recently that you could sling your rods under but wonder how safe that would be around the baggage handlers and, it seems, you cant take your rods onboard anymore??

All suggestions welcome.

Thank you kindly

Ben

Ah, the one I was thinking of was the Stonefly Destination bag. I see that Orvis do one too.

Anyone have any experience of either of these or any other suggestions?

Hi Ben,
I use a simple bag I got from Blacks, it has a stiff bottom and wheels with just a grab handle at the other end.
It takes my Marryat 10ft and I put my 8'6" in the same rod case nose to to tail.
The problem with the purpose built fishing travel bags is that because of the many, totally unnecessary, pockets etc. many of them are expensive and weigh as much as 6.5 kg. If you are on Ryanair that is already 40% of your checked baggage allowance.
My bag weighs less than 3kg, cost £40 and has, so far, done 2 trips to Canada and 2 to the Czech Republic without problems.
Another cheap, lightweight alternative is a cricket bag, they are long and light and also about £40.
Cheers
Bill

Hi Bill

you may have a very valid point there.

What model is your Blacks bag?

I have a snowboard bag that I was considering taking as (being for a weekend) I could pay for sports gear as a one off and load all my tackle in there and my clothes too

It is big though at 1.6m.....

I do also have a fairly large duffel bag in wheels but dont know if my 10'er will get in there (ooh err) so may have a look see.

My other issue with 'Destination Bags/ rod pods' is that they must just screm 'Steal Me!' to any light fingered baggage handler............sorry, I just dont trust them after what they have done to my surfboards in the past (utterly destroyed a brand new board)

Ta muchly

Ben,

Some of the really big bags have problems with the airlines. Simms used to have a huge one for 3-piecers but they discontinued it because of restrictions in length.
For 3 piece I'd get an extra case like the Kis one which can take all of your rods, they're about £50.
Putting rods inside normal soft duffels may be a bit dodgy, the handlers really give them a beating. I put a spey rod inside a heavy duty lockable rod case and it came out completely trashed - cordura completely ripped, the zip busted off, and the cap mangled. I had to dump it in the end. Luckily I decided to put the aluminum tube inside this as well, or the rod too would have been destroyed.
I have the Simms 4-piece (now discontinued) which weighs a ton because of the reinforcing bars inside, but it's bulletproof, and gives me peace of mind. Even though it's heavy 14kg for other gear is heaps for a week's destination or holiday/fishing trip, unless of course you're going for months and need everything including the kitchen sink!

Cheers

I used to have a Bazooka style Kis case that Virgin managed to break (I kid you not) in one flight - snapped the lip clean off and then berated me for flying with it in the first place

I think, regardless of what we use, the handlers will always fidn a way of breaking it and I think that if I try out a normal roller style duffel bag and leave teh rods in their tubes that I will be safe enough (he says, eyes cast to Heaven)

The last time I flew to SA, I used a heavy PVC pipe to stash my rods in and that worked OK but I am only off for a weekend so dont need that much or wish to be paying O'Weary and his merry band of muggers any more than I have too

Hi Ben,
It's a Blacks own brand but I can't find it on their website.
Cheers
