max is not specific enough for me so i'd say cast to a target.

with a clean/slicked line, an old worn line preferably.

If you are just interested in distance and not bothered how it lands, then a shooting head set up, either custom made or 40+ will probably get you out there furthest.

'Set up' I'm afraid is irrelevant. Give two people 'identical set-ups' and one will cast further than the other.

Are we talking max distance or max effective distance ?

Max effective is about turning the leader and the flies over - especially into a wind . You do that one by braking the shoot before the line touches down - otherwise the first four pulls are merely catching up to where the flies have landed in a heap .

Max distance is about technique - so find a coach and learn real double haul !

And then put the two together ! Do it on grass and go practise for half an hour a day !

Might take you a month or three .

And don't forget - serious distance is about heavy gear and shooting heads - an 11# will go a whole lot further than an 8# if you can drive it !

Best wishes and don't tennis your elbow !

Rarely, when casting over 100-120ft, will the fly/fluff land in front of the fly line

I think that depends on the individual doing the casting.

And also which direction the wind is coming from. I can cast a whole 30 yard WF with the wind coming from my left and slightly from the rear, and get the leader to turn over nicely.

Or as Lefty says, don't mess up your rotator cuff as this will certainly happen if you try to cast a heavy shooting head with your arm held high.
