Default Pike fly fishing

I'm heading to lough Corrib in a few weeks to do some fly fishing for pike after having great success last year was using a 50lb mono leader is this the best method or are there better?

There are decent knottable wire leaders available which are safer than mono for the bigger pike

Wire every time, it wont put the Pike off and eventually your luck will run out and you will get bitten off with mono.

Or you could join the late 20th Century and start using Mason hard Nylon in 40lb ! Such as is used by most Muskie Specialists in the USA and has been used by me and my customers in the UK for over a decade - no bite offs .

Also recommended and habitually used by my late pal Barrie Rickards - but what do we know !

When I was a member of the LAS they advocated wire - Mr. Rickards I believe was President.
I had a browse on the PAC site, and they still say wire is mandatory. Basic Pike Tackle
But hey what do they know..

wire is the best and safest for the pike. even then it needs checking for kinks and fraying. I would never use just nylon no matter how "tough".
google the pike fly fishing association, great blokes very helpful

Reminds me, the only time I ever got bitten off - was when I forgot to bring my traces. I used to jerkbait, and had 30lb spooled onto a Calcutta. I decided to chance it, since it was a long drive home, and I was using 9" Suicks. Sure enough, I got into a nice one which smashed the Suick on the surface. It thrashed on the surface for a while, then *ping* !! Never again.
