Default Fishing and the Rain

Hey all,

Wanted to know peoples thoughts on what I saw over the weekend...

I was fishing a small water over the weekend and had an amazing days fishing, one of the best days in my 14 years fishing. First 3 off dry fly on surface and two on at once (which is a first for me!)... ended up with 9 altogether, lost 6 and missed 4 rises

But the strange thing was there was about 12 guys fishing the water, and surprisingly for Scotland it started to rain! As soon as it started to rain every one put their jackets on (so they were prepared for rain... I was just in a t-shirt!) and then went and sat in the fishing hut, they then returned when it stopped raining!! I was soaked through but got 2 and missed 2 during the downpour.

I don't know if it was just being brought up fishing lochs on a boat where there was no shelter but I would never think of stopping fishing for rain unless it was thunder.

Do people on here do this? I'm not judging anyone, each to their own and all that, just interesting in reasoning behind it as never seen it before with a large number of people.

Well i was brought up through fishing rivers(no huts to run to for cover)......soggy sandwiches and cooling tea and soup from a flask,...it would take a lot of rain to shift me from fishing.....yes i do see people running for cover to the huts but i will still be out there as its just part of fishing to me, although i would have wet gear for long periods of rain...a t shirt not too handy for long wet spells.

Some of my most productive fishing has been during rain showers (especially at the very start). I stop if I hear thunder otherwise I just keep fishing but I have seen a lot of people head back to their cars when on rivers or back to the lodge when at a fishery. Mind you I'm nutty enough that I've also fished during heavy snow falls so I may not be the best person to comment on this.

Take care

I thought I had packed my waterproofs, was just too eager to get out fishing

Though after the rain stopped and the water settled down, a good Mayfly hatch happened... was good sport.

Default Rain

I usually check the weather forecast and go prepared as there is no shelter at Walkerwood reservoir, unless you cram into Pete's fishing hut.
In a real downpour or thunder you're never far from your car as it's only 27 acres.

Hey Bobby,

You guessed it in one although a private place I go to in France is open year round and I've fished there in December and January when there's been nearly a foot of snow on the ground and more coming down. The whole place is fed by a series of artesian wells so you can still fish when everything else is frozen solid. At that time of the year you're fishing large black streamers and melting the ice out of your guides with every other cast but the water is even clearer than usual and you cast to a specific fish and watch the attack all the way in! The lodge is a 16th century farmhouse that's been renovated and the lunches in the winter are incredible. The last winter lunch started with a roe deer pate en croute, main course was a haunch of young wild boar in a morrel mushroom sauce, then cheese and desert all served with a couple of bottles of a nice red wine and a glass of plum brandy. Mind you we did lose over two hours of fishing time during the meal and in my first three casts after lunch I caught three trees and lost two flies! Day of fishing plus the meal was 59 Euro and the meal alone would have cost me that much in a restaurant. Actually the brookie in my avatar was caught at this place.

Take care

Terry
