Default Backing?

Just a quick one folks. Would there be a problem using hi vis mono of say 20lb as backing if you play fish on the reel? Help save a few quid!!!

Default Not a problem Rob.

In fact, they actually make a mono for fly line backing. It's called "Amnesia" and comes (that I know of) in Flo. Green, Flo Yellow and Red. Not sure how available it may be, but 'Google' could give you a hint.

fae

Edit: Forgot to add. Save a few yards of the stuff as it makes a great fly body. Just wrap flat silver tinsel around the hook, and the Am. over that. The fly will practically 'glow in the dark!'

Amnesia is so named because it has little memory. Its principle use is for beach fishing, usually for rigs or shock leader. Any sea fishing outlet have it.
Tonys Tackle in Essex will have it in many flavours. Hth.

Use whatever you like!! A s long as it is able to run off reel on the very rare occasion it is required.
Backing rarely sees the light of day, unless you are salt water fishing for bones or the like!! The normal loch/river fisherman in this country never sees the backing out of tip ring when playing fish. (getting under parapet now!)

Thanks for that. One concern was that mono being relatively hard compared to soft backing that it might in some way damage the coating of the fly line, particularly at the knot connection between the mono an fly line which will be slightly proud.

Exactly why I prefer dedicated backing
