Default River Avon near Linlithgow, West Lothian/Central

Anyone viewing ever fished the little river Avon either
near Linlithgow, Muiravonside country park or Avonbridge
area?

I know it was wiped out by the paper mill years ago,
any recent reports?

You are right about being wiped out! In the eighties river was colour of milk due to westfield paper mill, things have changed now however.
Paper mill is long gone, river has good head of brown trout , sea trout run from april on , and odd salmon is being caught.
Avonbridge and slammanan angling association control permit rights for a lot of river, linlithgow angling club have sections, but not in areas you would expect!
Best place to start would be lochside tackle in linlithgow high street, where permits and details of club/stretches owned can be obtained.

Default Thank you

Thanks for the info, used to fish it near Avonbridge when I was a young lad - good if trout are starting to thrive in it again - might just buy a permit and start giving it a go again.

Working in Linlithgow just now and been having a look around, some nice pools round the Mill road industrial estate, the cement place heading to lothalan roundabout and down near the polmont ski slope.

Will head to the takle shop and give it a try!

Cheers!

Section below this, where bo'ness road crosses river, downstream through refinery, used to be brill for sea trout, but is tidal and has to be fished on outgoing tide.
Slamman club used to have permits for this bit!!!

Default There you go

Bert,

I would never had thought that, amazing you can have a wee river like this on your doorstep and know so little about it!

Been checking where it flows from and stuff, used to live on a farm that it flowed through down from Muiravonside country park and noticed the park has opened up the pool under the big viaduct - it used to be pretty hard to get to previous to them putting the steps up, great pool but it will be getting fished to death now.

Need to look out my little rod now!!!

Default Fished by default

Well my auld fella fell ill on Sat night so couldn't go to my usual haunt on Sunday. My 4 year old saw my kit and started greeting for me to take him out for an hour so we headed to the Avon ( the weir out past Avonbridge) armed with my old diawa river rod that I have passed to him - he caught his first 2 little brown trout and he was delighted.

Default Bert

Bert,

I liked that more than my usual Sunday visit to the local fishery.

Forgot how good it was to walk along a river watching for movement, thats the wee fella hooked now as well, super!!!

Brought back many memories for me and anybody wanting to spend quality time with the kid should give it a try, magic.

Thumbs up Yes

Hi Bert,

Thats it indeed!!!

Can remember catching my first fish on a home 'tied'
ace of spades (looked like some wee beastie that had
been stepped on).

Do you fish any other local rivers, forgot how good
it was having a rumage along a bank.

Even better that it doesn't cost the earth and it
can be a couple of hours here and there )less grief
from the wife)...
