Default how do trout see ?

how do trout see? There are lots of theories on the net but wanted to see what opinion is the most popular?

Trout see colours? ture or false or what colours cannt they see?
Trout take dry flies by looking at the inverted mirror image?
Trout see underwater like us (eg diver with goggles)?

Reason for the ask is that there is a cool looking fly tying gadget that you drop you fly into to see the mirror image and that helps apparently with your fly tying.

The answers to most of your questions will be found in the book: "What Fish See" by Dr. Colin Kageyama.

Dr. Kageyama is not only a fully qualified optometrist with a large practice in California, he is also a very competent angler.

There's a few conflicting posts on here and it seems the concensus from the self proclaimed experts is that fish are colour blind, so I feel another experiment in the offing. I've got Frank McPhilips rather excellent dubbing, colours 1-12 I think are a good choice. Twelve colours/shades twevle flys tied same pattern, dubbed body with shoulder hackle and perhaps a silver rib. An evening Loch Buidhe should do the trick. To make things easier on ones self I'll fish bad Irish style which will give me four casts.

Anyone tried box 3 colours 25-36 ? I bought it at the weekend and tied a few bumbles, it seems to have a sort of flouro glow to it ?

Do you not think that might be a bit flawed? Even different colours appear as different shades in the grey scale. I'm not saying they are colour blind mind you, just that your experiment is fundamentally flawed.

There are quite a few threads about trout vision, have a look with the Search function. I would recommend looking at the links to scientific papers rather than the whisky fuelled opinions of every Jock McSporran on the internet though!

And 'lighten up.' An often asked question, but many may find it of interest; and knowledge/research of 'what's what' does move forward.

mmm following on my orginal post, in relation to fly tying has anyone got the c+f fish eye is it any good?

I reccon any 10ft leader will definitatly give your fly a different perspective!
