Default Corporate Days - Ever been on one?

Have you noticed how many fisheries advertise what are termed: "Corporate Days"? If you have ever attended such a day you will know exactly what a load of *******s they can be.

Many years ago I had the misfortune of being invited (actually I was ordered) to attend such a day. This was the result of the managing director of the company I had just joined fancying himself as a fly fisher. As I had just joined the company, the board of directors knew very little of myself, so I decided I had better show willing, and in any event the hotel we stayed at was very swish indeed and I wasn't paying.

The corporate day, was in fact a whole weekend as the venue was 2 1/2 hours drive away, set in stunning Drakensberg countryside. (In those days we measured distances in time it took to get there, not miles or kilometers.)

The Saturday passed pleasantly enough, but that evening the MD decided that the Sunday morning be spent fishing a competition. I was approached by my new boss and told in no uncertain terms to allow the big boss to win, or there just might be a problem for me on the Monday morning in the office.

As it turned out, I won fairly easy, catching 12 trout in 2 hours. The MD blanked.

On the Monday I was carpetted and expecting this I already had my resignation made out and in my pocket.

I resigned by chucking the envelope across the table. It fell to the floor, followed by the keys to my company car. It was the best thing I ever did as I had had time to nick a large amount of the companies data base which I was able to take with me to my next job.

But since then I have never ever been involved in company fishing or golf days. And I would advise anyone to keep clear of them. Work and pleasure must never be mixed.

Ron,

You talk some absolute rubbish at times, I have attended and worked on corporate days, they have been a brilliant way of breaking the ice, and having some good fun.

What your above post says to me is that your boss was a tool

............and not only his boss

This was an opportunity to help everyone else catch, especially the boss and thereby be hugely in demand. Even at Ron's level of competence, he would have shone in comparison with his inbred colonial mates.

I have participated in and run both fishing and golf events for my customers and they have been extremely well received.

Charlie

Well if you & Charlie think that is your idea of fishing & having fun, you really should have a good look in the mirror & ask yourself why you do it. Sorry but there you go.

By the above statement / admission of theft , they were probably better off without you.

Agree with Charlie, corporate days are about learning and sharing, it may even get a few more dedicated flyfishers

Default Corporate Sporting Days

Hello Folks

I have coached at various corporate events fly fishing and clay shooting and like some of you they have been both fun, successful and financially rewarding.

Looks like you had a rough ride Ron and unfortunately it does happen I know but guess I have been very lucky.I have had a few awkward moments looking after/loading for shooters on driven shoot days but figured it out and still had the customary tip at the end of the day.

Coincidence I guess but just yesterday I attended a simulated game/clay day here in Dorset with group from London which went very well and they all looked well lit up when I left them in the pub last night.Do not think any of them are for the high jump come Monday.Hopefully not anyway.

Best JP

I think what I should have added was that this all took place many years ago - 1975 if I remember right.

And yes the boss was one of those old British colonial types who were quite honestly unbelievable in their attutude to life. In the sales office, canteens and toilets were strictly segregated. They even had a seperate sales desk for Asiatic owned companies!!!

When they had a board meeting the directors all dressed up in morning suits with striped trousers just as they did in the Victorian period. It was family owned with old portraits of previous directors scowling down from frames in the wall.

And quite honestly I couldn't stand this company and was only too pleased to have been given another job offer elsewhere.

But most of those old men are long dead, as is the company!

Ah! The bad old days, eh Ron? Not like the multicultural utopia we have today
