Default AFTMA question..

I wonder if anybody can help me, i recently bought a Greyflex M2 fly rod AFTMA 6/7, and was told by the guy i bought it off to use a WF7 line, (so i went and bought a new reel and £90's worth of line.)

but whilst fishing yesterday, i got talking to a casting instructor who says i should be using a WF6 line instead, ..

So, can somebody be so kind and give me a definitive answer as to what line is best suited for my rod ... Cheers in advance, Marc...

I have yet to find a #6/7 rod that cast better with a 6.
Also don't listen to anyone that tells you that 6/7 means dt6 or wf7.

No.

Nobody on the whole of gods green earth can give you a definitive answer to "What Line best suits this rod?".

Because it depends not just on the rod but also on the bod holding the rod - the shop's suggestion of a 7 is a perfectly reasonable cold guess - but if the casting instructor has seen you using the rod - for real on actual water - then his call of a 6 might be better - OTOH were he discussing the rod in the abstract then he might be saying that his own personal preference would be for a #6 on that rod.

Did you pay him for a lesson?

Thumbs up Very good answers above.

Only thing I might add would be (US designed rods) with a two number designation usually means that an accomplished caster may prefer the lighter line for longer range casting, a less accomplished caster (like me) may find a few more grains in the head easier to handle (cast). This really shows up with 2-handers and, RIO for one, usually publishes (it's on their web site) a "A" and a "B" line recommendation based upon the above.

Did he say why you 'should' be using a 6? It would be helpful to know.

28 years consultant for Shakespeare / Pure Fishing says ; there ain't no rules about what you write on a rod - there are quite specific rules about lines weight definition though .

Best advice is to try one the same and one up and one down from the writing and see which weight of line suits you and the rod the best . And then hope the pig in a poke you bought is actually the rod you wanted !

A proper tackle dealer usually will let you go and try before you buy. An unprofessional one might well not - and if you're daft enough to buy a rod off of the internet you are on your own - the lack of definitions on rod rating means any competent lawyer could likely drive a coach and horses through your very best return argument in a court !

Try it before you buy it is the sensible rule - the other way is to test cast your mates's outfits and then duplicate the one you like - rods are pretty much consistent in batches at the least ! ( But not necessarily batch to batch ! )

I have written many articles on this subject and even made a very little money by it . I am consistently surprised that anybody much doesn't understand real life !

Be lucky

No, he had a couple of casts with my set up, looked at the rating on my rod asked what line i had on and said that he always pairs his rod with the lower aftma rating, and that maybe i should try doing the same, he didn't really give any explanation as to why he prefers to set his rods up that way,

but thanks for all your answers, as it was only my 2nd fly fishing session and i thought that maybe i'd (originally) been ill advised on what line i should pair with the rod..

Thanks again,, Marc..

using alternative logic would it not be safe to assume that the 6 would perform the same as the 7 in a slightly longer cast?
its hard to generalise when you dont know the distance cast.

... or the line profile, or whether it's a half-weight-higher line, et cetera.
I would say the instructor hasn't done you a favour by causing you to doubt the outfit you have.
