Default Camping and fishing in the Lake District

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone could pass on some recommendations for the following.
The inlaws want to go to the lake district next summer with their caravan and have invited our family along as well (we will be in a tent). So I have been asked to search out some nice campsites that will take caravans, tents, dogs and kids.
As Im the one doing this then I see no reason not to include a nice bit of fishing into the equation as well
Ideally I would like access to a nice small river or a small stillwater as I would love to take my eldest (who will be 7) out with me. If its on the site then even better

Cheers.

Sheepy.

Default River Lowther

I camped here years ago. It's right on the banks of the River Lowther and used to include free fishing.

Default Fishing in the Lake District

Hi, You could try Wych Elm in the village of Hulme near the M6. Look on lakesandcaravans.co.uk for more info. Run by Ken and Jean Gill. Nice fishery with Rainbows and strong Blues too. Enjoy.

Regards

I do this routine every year - up there next week in fact. First few days at Penrith - Lowther Park (river fishing isn't free though - day tickets available - its hard going though - we tend not to fish it, just use the site as a base), then we move across to Castlerigg Farm site at Keswick and fish the rivers in that area via day membership of Keswick AA (tickets from Tourist Info in the town). Both those sites are good - saying that, sorry, forget Castlerigg, its just camping! (just noticed you said caravans too). However, there is a caravan site just going into Keswick from Penrith, off the A66. Never tried it (I'm a camper, not a caravanner), but probably good and its a good location, on the river too (Greta)

If your'e staying around the keswick area you could try Watendlath tarn just to the east of Derwentwater, you can hire boats or fish from bank, permits available at Watendlath. If you dont catch anything at least youll get stunning scenery.

If you do fish Watendlath, from bank, fish from left hand bank and fish two suspernder type hare's ears, or similar. Fish are free rising and come in quite close patrolling marginal weed....but move out of casting range quite quickly with repeated casting. Fish a couple of dries/emergers, cast a good line out, sit down (the most important bit!), and wait....and hang on to your rod. Sit down, off the skyline and resist the temptation to keep casting and the fish will gradually come back into casting/catching range. If in a boat, drift down the middle (too deep to anchor anyway), hang the anchor weight over the side and it will act as a sort of drogue, eventually catch bottom as you get closer to bank. Fish same set up as above basically, casting to rising fish or just speculatively - you should still catch off the top even if nothing obvious going on. It switches on and off through the day, but its a lovely venue - about as wild as you can get for a stocked rainbow water.
