Default Up the pond today

Thought that I would have a change today.
Instead of going to the river I decided to give our stocked pond a go.
It is about 6 acres with an average depth of about 6ft.
Last time it was stocked was in mid March 300 fish of about 2/3lb.
Looked at our record book and it showed that yesterday 2 of our
members caught 10 fish between them, all on various flies/lures.
Rowed out to the middle of the pond and dropped the anchor-only me
on the water.
Lovely day and I was surrounded with fish topping, splashing, jumping
and cruising about like dolphins.
On went a couple of dries attached to a long tapered leader.
Done everything with them- dragged them twitched, left them static
and changed them.
Not a bit of interest.
On went sub surface-then buzzers and finally big lures.
Went all round the pond for 4 hours and only had one rise-one knock
and one grab.
Left the pond as I found it with fish topping-splashing----
It defeated me today but tomorrow is an other day.
Any suggestions of what to try next or perhaps what I should have
done today.

Only thing i can think of that might have worked is a few Diawl Bachs on the washing line method.

i probably wouldent of anchored as you would cover much more fish and fished into the banks. but sum days u can get fish rising all over the place and find it really hard to catch any, really frustrating.

Try to establish what they are rising to Morris and take it from there.Did you notice any insects on the water surface....?
With the bright warm weather that we had today, there is a good chance of black gnats, beetles and hawthorns falling onto the water.
What dries did you try and how did you present them.....?
You were probably on the right road going with dries but your pattern choice or more specifcally the size/colour/profile of pattern could have been way off the mark.

I had a chat with one of the guys who caught fish the day before.
They killed one of the fish and found that it was full of little black beetle type insects.
I caught fish last year on sedges pulled across the surface, that was later on in the year, wouldnt touch them yesterday.
I am new to fly fishing and dont know my flies-I must learn.
Thanks for all your advice.

hi morrisdancer.
you could do worse than try a peacock+ black in different sizes a good general pattern that covers beetles too. have fun solving the puzzle
tight lines

Hi I may be way off the mark and am quite willing to be shot down but try a Corixa on a very short leader about 12" in length, see thread about the corixa use. Noel

Ok...you did say it Noel.... Fish rising in six foot of water. They could very well have been moving to corixa, taking them close to the surface but in this instance I would not expect the ultra short leader on a fast sinker approach to be a go-er.
Your fly would not be in the zone.....but hey if nothing seems to be working ,anything is worth a shot.....

Hi Wee Jimmy I was meaning for it to used it on a floating line if the fish are rising this would put the Corixa in the zone, they do not only dwell in the lower layers of water. Cheers Noel
