Default casting

Having mainly fished stillwaters, large and small and useing weight forward 7,8 and 9 for the last 30 years i thought it was about time i had a go at the rivers so i thought right got to get some lighter tackle so i got myself a 9ft 6weight rod okay i have always been an alright caster and i managed to cast the 6weight okay, but the presentation was not that good.I then went and bought a 5 weight rod now this rod has got more of a through action than i am used to,i am reliably informed that is the type of action required of a rod for river fishing.I am in the process of sorting out some lessons but i have a question, when i am on the last false cast and trying to get the fly to its desired location i am finding the rod going from side to side okay for doing one of theose snake casts, is it that i am putting too much power into it?Thank You
