Default Storing My Lovely New Reel (and a knot question!)

Hi All.

Firstly hello! I'm pretty new to these forums (and to fly fishing for that matter!) and really keen to get stuck in.

Ive just gotten myself a lovely orvis frequent flyer (9 foot #6) and a battenkill mid arbor III reel.

I live in Sweden now (orignally from the UK) and will be fishing mostly trouts in lakes to begin with.

Anyhow my first question (of many more to come in sure!), i've finally gotten a leader and tippet now and tonight have set this up for the first time using a loop connection (from the line to the leader).

My questions...

1) What is the best knot to use to tie the tippet to the fly (its a 5x nano mono vision tippet and will be attaching to some medium sixed flies for trout fishing). What are the pros and cons?

2) When I'm done (it took me all darn night!) I'd like to store the leader, tipped and fly line all on the reel so I can go out and practise. Is there any reason why I shouldn't store the leader/tippet on the reel? At the moment as a beginner I only have one set up so should I get into the habit of untying these every time or can I store them on the reel without causing damage?

Many thanks in advance!

The leader if stored on the reel may cut through the line so would recommend not doing that!
As for knots- It is best to get someone to try and show you as its hard to explain online...

I've never had a problem in 26 years doing that & I think you'll find the vast majority on here also do it. The key is to wind the line on evenly when you finish, then not wind the leader/tippet on too tightly on top.

or just wind it around the outside of the reel.

well best made aware of it as not long after I started fly fishing I can remember slitting a line by doing that.

I like the turle knot - and the "uni Knot" - google them.
The Turle is secure, easy to make and presents the fly superbly - but can be a pain to unpick.
The Uni is slower to make, does not present quite as well, but is easy to undo.

You pays your money and....

I've stored the leader with tippet on the reel - and often got away with it - But I have had the leader disappear inside the turns of the fly line - the resulting fankle is a right royal pain in the posterior.

Thanks all this is most helpful!

I think the storage issue will end up being a compromise, whilst I'm learning (and the set up time takes me hours!) I'll keep it on the reel (gently) and then once I get to the point when I can knock up a knot in no time I'll start taking them off.

RE: the knots thanks thats helpful.

Off to practise casting tonight, can't wait!
