Default girl casting

my daughter who is 9 has shown an interest in fly fishing the only one out of 3 girls. so i wondered if anybody out there had ever had the problem of teaching basic casting to one so small. not sure what rod i should use to get her started. all my 9ft 6 seem a bit to big.. if i could get her casting reasonably well she just might take to it. has anyone been down this road!

Hi,

There's been a few younger kids that have come along to the casting club for tuition. I'd definitely go with as light a rod as you have (or maybe buy a cheap one) and probably shorten a bit from the 9' 6! Her arm strength and wrist strength will be nothing like yours obviously and something we take as being real easy will probably just about break her arm to start with!

Other than shortening and going lighter, all the best! I'm sure you'll feel great when she starts casting a line well!

Have a look at these: Rods - ECHO - Echo MPR - Flytackle Europe It's only a practice rod obviously but may be ideal in helping her get started?

Hope that helps.

Hi I have had some experience of teaching youngsters casting as I am a level one coach with the Welsh Federation of Anglers. I am also female living on the Llyn Peninsula so if you are near I am quite happy to help your daughter we girls need to stick together.

A 4-5# shaky odessey under £30 she dont need anything to long 9ft be max.
keep the casting simple dont want to nag her to death get her to keep her elbow tight into her side and just go from the horizontal to vertical, the wrist will keep everything in the right angles, she,ll be casting like a pro if you keep to that simple method, you kow the rest so get her casting and onto the water
