Default Furled leader

Morning
Having read this forum for quite some months now I am in my first year fly fishing mainly reservoirs (Eyebrook) on that very steep learning curve I have seen mention to a furled leader can anyone tell me what they are and why and when they would be used in reservoir fishing more out of curiosity really.
P.S love the site loads of info for the learner.

A furledled leader is a leader constructed out of multiple fine filaments, and braided or twisted, to give the angler a specific taper. They are popular among anglers who use heavy rods to fish rivers, as they compensate for the lack of delicate presentation from a heavier rod, that is required for fishing a river.

Not necessarily true, but in general using tapered mono leaders and monofil, copolymer and or flouro materials offers more flexibility in constructing appropriate length leaders for various still water techniques and tactics.

However, for top of the water work, perhaps when accurate presentation of a single dry fly or emerging patterns is called for a furled leader may well be a good call on a reservoir.

'Never' is a very limiting word.

Well you could have fooled me! I use my furled leader all the time and have consistantly caught fish in good numbers on Reservoirs. Can't remember the last time I blanked.

Take no notice of the "Never for Reservoir fishing" statement and make your own mind up. A furled leader is one of the best accessories you'll ever buy (contact Phil from Spiders Plus ).

Just add a good length of tippet to the FL, It'll give you better turnover. Can be treated to sink or float.

What utter nonsense.

Highlander could probably contribute here, but a US furled leader maker BlueSky made a "stillwater" model, which was much longer than the normal furled leader, and it was said that it could turn over much longer tippets and heavier flies.
I had one of these, and found it good except that it felt quite heavy; it became necessary to roll it to the surface before lifting off to recast. It seemed to slow the action of the rod down, like casting with a "half weight" line which is not ideal with softer tipped rods.

Furled leaders are about improved turnover, due to them having little or no memory. It's quite common knowledge that mono tapered leaders, sometimes do not present as well as they should with heavier rods, so many anglers choose to go with furled leaders to compensate..... Nothing wrong with this.

I also disagree about not using furled leaders for stillwater/reservoir fishing. I use mine all the time when reservoir fishing and as well as improving turnover, it acts like a slow sink tip which is perfect for buzzer/nymph fishing. N
