Default The way we were

Youngest son, Gareth, who only recently (last couple of years) started fishing, and only this year started fly fishing, came home today like a man possesed! Never seen him so excited!
Turns out he thinks he has caught Moby Dick!!
In a way i suppose it was.
Bearing in mind he has never caught a trout over 2 lbs, he hooked this lunker, and landed it on the fly, and had to bring it home to show dad how its done!

Just watching the kids delight and pure "i am the best attitude" didnt half take me back!
The three phases came to mind, he has done the catch the most bit, now he has done the catch the biggest bit, next is the catch the most difficult bit, (although he doesnt know this yet!), when out with his mates!
A well known angler once said that the moment of "the take" is the only thing that takes me back to the feelings of my youth, well, watching my sons swagger with this fish was almost as good.
A memory he will never forget.

Good for him Bert, looks mighty pleased with himself, and so he should be.

Nice one Bert!

How old was Gareth when he started fishing?

My lad's 13 and is showing no signs of interest yet. I'm not sure how to get him interested without overdoing it and putting him off.

Nice fish. Looks around the 6-7lb mark.
I still vividly remember the first fish I caught which was a non-standard stockie & it was a 4lb 8oz rainbow from a beautiful fishery in Hampshire called Ladywell Lakes in 1984 when I was 11.

Gareth only started taking it seriously when he was 15.
We did a lot of the end of the pier stuff when on holidays, he once caught 87 mullet when we were in majorca, just to out do another 10 year old! hence the caught the most comment, he also came out the odd time with me on rivers, when younger, but did get bored.
I think the secret is letting them loose on bait fishery, where they will catch the odd one or two whilst on their own," i did it my way", so to speak. Gives them more interest.
Once that hurdle has been crossed the kids tend to be more intent on advice, and instruction, and more importantly how to beat the old man!!
