Default What I learned today...

There's nothing like first hand experience. Here's what I learned during my first trip to Loganlea today:

1. What a sepia dun looks like in the flesh, and that it takes a stretch of the imagination to call it "sepia" coloured.

2. how to roll cast, and how incredibly useful it is

3. how to steeple cast, and how incredibly useful it is

4. that even with an 8# sinking WF line, I still can't cast into a strong wind.

5. The sinking line/booby combination really does work (the act of a desperate man - last 2 casts of the day = 2 fish)... and...

6. ... it really does hook them deeply.

7. if i leave my bag on a steep slope, it will roll into the water.

8. tubes of unopened pringles are waterproof.

Been a pretty full day. Feel like I deserve a bit of:

Neil

Oh yes, I use the empty tubes as camera housings for DIY ROV's...

I've never known Sepias to hatch in sufficient numbers to instigate a rise so they're probably not worth imitating.

Learn to double-haul to help you cast into a wind.

Fishing boobies isn't fly-fishing.

Do I detect some criticism there?

First fish (the best one - archetypal "over-wintered") came to a buzzer. But after a further 6 hours of straight line nymphing, buzzering, washing lining with a dry fly, traditional wets, the odd lure, I figure that having 3 casts with a booby at the end of the day not such a disgrace! And to be honest, I don't really see that what is or isn't fly fishing matters. Yes, I find catching on an imitative fly more rewarding, and fly fishing more interesting and fun than bait fishing, but I don't get the purists' view. Happy for you to hold it though. Next trip I'll be off spinning for pike which I haven't done since I were't lad. If I don't snag a pike, I might do a tour of the loch with a wee mepps and see if there's any trout about. Now that's definately not fly fishing but I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

Cheers,

Neil
