Default leader and tippet question

i was only useing my leader today and had to clip it back from changing fly's,
that being said will the leader now not being as long , will that make the line sink more even if you have a floating line? i have a 5-6 wgt. line what would be a good leader and tippet combo to start with? thanks

Hi Tav;

My recommendation is a furled leader and then attach three to four feet of straight tippet via a perfection knot. Grease up the furled leader if you want it to float better (I just false cast a couple of times to dry it). when your tippet gets too short just replace it with a new length. Two excellent sources on this forum: MrTrout and Rod Dibble. You'll discover that you get better turnover and that your accuracy will increase.

Take care

Terry

Why not try making your own furled leaders

... and following Vermontdrifter's advice.

All I would want to say is that, there are furled leaders and there are 'Furled Leaders' . You take your pick.
Rod.

That video clip is for a basic "singapore" type furled leader, using mono - not a continuous taper, just essentially two sections of different thicknesses and with a knot in the middle. Doesn't work too well using braid (I've tried!) and not the same (ie not as good) as done by Steven (mrtrout) and Rod Dibble.

On the original question, it really depends what type of fishing you're doing, eg rivers or stillwaters and what type of technique (dries, nymphs, lures etc?) can you give us a better idea?
