Default Anchoring on Corrib

Just wanted to get peoples opinions on this ever increasing practice on Corrib. I live local and have fished the lake for many years, I guess the trend of anchoring from what I have seen has only really got going in the last few years. I don't have a problem with somebody droping an anchor just off an island or up at the top of a bay but on my last few outings I have seen lads dropping anchor right in the middle of a drift while buzzer fishing. To me this is ****, I don't think anybody has the right to have sole use of a section of the lake. They should do there drift and go around again, use a drogue if you want. I tackled a few lads for it last Wed and all I got out of them was a shrug, sign of the times I guess. I think it's bad manners and ignorent to do it in the middle of an area were other boats are drifting and fishing.

There is two sides to every story,Gary,
Corrib is a vast water about 35miles long and about 45000 acres. I think that there is probably enough water for everybody not to have to fish the exact same drift.Personally I like wet fly fishing but I'm not adverse to a bit of buzzer fishing now and again.

Agreed it's a big water and so on but some of the more productive holes for buzzer fishing can be very small indeed and I don't agree that somebody should have the right to have a monoploy on a section of water. Was taking to a lad who got two fish going down a drift and when he went back up the top to do it again (as you would) a boat had anchored where he met the fish, can't see that being right. Anyway the new bye-laws state in it's Etiquette section

When fishing, do not anchor where other boats may wish to drift. This inconveniences other anglers wishing to fish that location, and can lead to conflict.

Couldn't agree more with this.

I agree with you in principle, as I am sure most experienced boat anglers would, but could it not work the other way round? Whats to stop somebody watching somebody catching at anchor then claiming the right to drift through that spot? Maybe it should be taken out of the etiqutte section and made a rule thereby stopping anybody fishing from the anchor and avoiding all the aggro. I'm not experienced enough to give a definitive answer but by banning fishing off the anchor it may be fairer to everybody. Will be interesting reading others comments.

I have fished Corrib many many times. I understand your gripe. However, 35 miles long-45000 acres surely there is room and fish enough to support any legal method. You have the biggest area I've ever seen to fish in and want to dispute 60 or 70 sq m. Mmm, only in ireland eh!

Corrib's rocky bottom can be a disaster for loosing anchors whilst fly fishing for pike... for drift's and wind lanes I think a drogue covers most options and if a boat is hogging a buzzer hole, luckily Corrib has the expanse to find plenty of fresh prospects. Personally I'm not too keen on fishing 'stale' water or a drift that another boat has flogged to death.
By the way Garry 29th of the 4th (April)...1928 - is that when you started fishing Corrib?

Cant see a problem if you are the only boat in the area but if there are other boats in the area i dont think it,s good practice to fish the same piece of the loch and keep it all to yourself even though it is a big water

How much of that 4500 acres is dead water ? not much fly actions in the deep water.
The gripe with anchoring is doing so over know hotspots.
There is less and less boating etiquette on Corrib every year. Im sick of guys motoring up drifts or cutting across and just staring straight ahead.
Last year I couldnt believe what I saw, I was out in a force 6 or 7, only one other boat out and he had motored a mile just to cut into the drift where I met a few fish as I was going back up to fish it down again.
So you see its a small lake after all.

Heres a trick, get on the lake before a competition starts, drift over some spot in full view of the motoring comp anglers, and hold the tail fly in you fingers and double over the rod, see how quickly they will stop and drift on top of you. For added theatrics leave the fly go as they approach and raise eyes to heaven and hold arms apart about 3 feet. With any luck they will waste an hour fishing your drift

Unfortunately, bad etiquette is getting more common each year,
pure ignorance most of the time.

I have comtemplated getting one of these remote control helicopters with blades fitted

should shred any flyline with ease
&
stop guys cutting in on your drift
