On my morning route for walking the dog I kept seeing a little wild trout over several days. Naturally I gave him a name (Eric). What is cool is that Eric lives in a stream that has massive inputs of ochre (Iron III oxide, or rust) from groundwater upwellings in the coal measures near our house. Basically - it doesn't look like the kind of water that could support self-sustaining wild trout, so waving to Eric always put a smile on my face on the morning walk.
Of course, being an incurable fly fisher, I did want a quick closer look at Eric so I set out on Friday lunchtime to see if he liked the look of my dry fly (notice that the riverbed is orange from bank to bank!)
Turns out he was partial to a little aphid pattern and, I'm also happy to say, that after a quick photo he's back in his spot in the stream when I've walked past over the weekend.
Naturally, having caught him once, I'm more than happy to just wave and say hello when we walk by.
Eric's highly attractive surroundings!
