My quick flick through O'Reilly's "Match the Hatch" shows a few spring spinners of upwinged flies in reddish shades (i.e. as might return to the water to lay eggs) but no duns of that colour (i.e. as might come off in a hatch). So can't help, but have a bump anyway.

Hi Niel, thanks for taking the time to look i too have the same book but i could not see anything in it,these things were flying up and down the water and there was quite a lot of them i mean one minute there was`nt any about then all of a sudden they were there flying about 2 to 3ft above the water thats what made me think that they had just hatched and the birds could not get enough of them.
