Default Passport/Token schemes

I have just started looking for rivers which are accessible to day anglers.
I am aware of the Wye/Monnow passport, and was wondering how many of these schemes are there around the UK?
I know there is also one for the SouthWest.
Is there a list of schemes, or is it a case of searching and trawling for hours on end?

Any advice gratefully received.
Cheers,
Gary

I think you'll find everything you need here!

Wild Trout Fishing

So far I've fished beats on the Tyne (excellent), West country (excellent), Wye and Usk (excellent) passport schemes. I've also just visited (for work purposes) beats on the Monnow which had plenty of fish rising (stupid work!) and have proved a great success.

I aim to add the Peak passport scheme to that list in the next few weeks when everything has warmed up a bit.

PS - join the WTT!

Try googling River Trent trust - They've started up this season, and have a series of beats in the derby dales / Dove...

There's a direct link to the Peak Passport scheme (Trent Rivers Trust) in the link I posted above (as well as direct links to all the other existing schemes).

Go crazy and get busy with some tokens....

I have fished quite a few beats on the Eden Rivers scheme (Go Wild) and also had a first dabble on the Peak Passport one a couple of weeks ago. I also have the book for the Wye & Usk one but haven't yet had chance to take advantage - bit of a trek for me with my limited time. However, I spend a week fishing up in Cumbria every June and for the last 3 or 4 years we've sampled a good few beats on the Eden scheme during that week. The Wye & Usk has lots of water, as does the Eden scheme. The Peaks one is just in its infancy really so only a few beats so far and quite short ones generally too.

My comments are that these are good, worthy schemes and provide a great opportunity for the day ticket angler who likes to get away from the crowds a bit and experiment on some untried water, usually in fantastice countryside. Also, once you have a book of vouchers you can go when it suits you, no hassle, and the vouchers are even interchangeable. However, it is worth setting aside some time for checking beats out first, or on the day for a few hours before fishing, as they are not always what you might anticipate. Take good maps and have a few reserves lined up so that if you turn up to fish a beat and its a bit less accessible than you thought, or you just don't fancy it much, you can head off to another one. Also, if its a short beat it won't last you all day (if you're out for a day). They are very varied and inevitably are the bits the clubs don't want, so can be a bit hit and miss, but half the fun is finding out - just be prepared to be flexible and adapt to the situation as you find it.. Oh - some of the prices are variable too - the Wye & Usk beats are generally more expensive than the Eden Rivers ones (for example - many of those are just 2 vouchers, ie a fiver, which means you can do a few in one day if you fancy and still not spend much). Have fun!

Thanks PG, that's exactly what I was looking for.
Some good links on there.
Thanks JeffR too. I haven't tried rivers yet, so I am trying to work out where I can go, for a weekend, and hopefully learn something ! Just trying to narrow down the areas a bit.

Speaking for the Monnow, which has 21 beats in the Wye and Usk Passport; they are most definitely not the beats that the "clubs do not want"! I would suggest that is the true for most of the WUF beats.

As an example; Fish the Escley and you can have two beats of over 2 miles for £10 each, pretty reasonable value, I would have thought.

All the schemes are different and all the beats are different so there will be plenty to suit the individual. The one thing they do have in common is they give the stream a value to the farmer and the local community and make it much more likely to be cherished.
