Default Fluorocarbon Line - which knots?

I was using Fluorocarbon line as my leader and had a dropper tied to it using a water knot and a slip knot for the hooks. Twice I was broken admittedly by big fish but the third time I saw the fish which couldn't have weighed more than 2 lb. The first time I doubt the line was responsible but the second the line broke less than 1 cm from the dropper knot and the third time just above it.

I understand you are supposed to wet the line when tying a knot which I do with spit but is there anything else I must take in to concideration? I'm a little frustrated as I've got my casting technique good enough to use dry flies and was having a lot of fun but the fish I should have caught escaped through broken line.

I use nothing but fluro....8lb from fly line to dropper and 6lb to point, the dropper will be the 8lb...joined same as you and only have trouble if get dropper tangled and have extra knot.

Slip knot? I'd use a tucked half blood knot.

With regard to droppers I use a 3 (or in finer material 4) turn water knot, always using the downwards tag for the droppers.

Yep thats the knot I use. Misread a webpage I was using to find out the name of the knot I used.

What conciderations should I use when making knots with fluorocarbon line is it simply just wet the line with spit or should I be using some kind of lubricant? The problem is obviously with the water knot. I'll try and practice with it.

Well im too old to change and after 30 odd years of spit i still seem to have plenty left....make sure your 2 loops are even though b4 applying the spit.

I'll keep on telling everybody .

Nothing better than ordinary nylon - I won't sell fluorocarbon ( it breaks ) and although this has lost me a lot of sales over the years - it hasn't lost me any customers .

I have lost count of folks coming in my shop and saying 'It broke DURING THE FIGHT ! '

And Bayer still make the best standard no nonsense mono and I'll sell that to you at £3 per 100yards !

I have given up with fluorocarbon! To many lost fish no matter which knots, how many turns etc! OK, 10 or 8lb test may work, but it's pretty limited! Also flouro takes several thousand years to breaks down, so that should be enough deterrence to those that actually care.
