Default Wind ???

I was thinking of taking the lake boat out today but not sure on the wind conditions.

The forecast for the inland lake is winds at North force 3 to 4. How strong is this and is it OK to fish or not? I bought the boat a couple of months ago but the two previous times I was out the conditions were perfect. I'm still a novice to lake boat fishing so If in doubt I don't go out.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Ray.

Ray, where are you planning on going out. You have to take the size and shape of the lough into consideration. For instance Mask in a north wind can be a dangerous place because it is very open and exposed. Corrib on the other hand has numerous bays and inlets and you can nearly all ways find somewhere to hide out of the worst of the wind. Find a sheltered spot and you should be OK but, the general rule of thumbs is, if your uncomfortable and don't feel safe on the water when the wind picks up, turn around and head for the shore and go home. The big Irish loughs are not to be taken lightly you must respect them at all times. Little steps are the way to go and over time you will become more experienced and more confident. Good luck and be careful,oh and don't forget the life jacket..ever.

Hi Trout Hunter,

I was thinking of Lough Owel. There are sheltered spots there. I think I will go and have a look and see if there are many other boats out and also get some local advise.

Thanks,

Ray.

Hi Ray, just watch Owel as it is a little open and can get rough. Your best bet is to try to go out from the shore that the wind is blowing out from and don't venture out too far. That way you won't be getting the full belt of the wind and should be comfortable. Just take it handy and don't worry about fishing, learn to handle the boat first and when your boating skills are up to speed then you can concentrate on the fish. I know I have said it before but when you feel unsafe or not happy with the conditions head for home. When I was younger I would have stayed out in any weather and saw some days when the waves were like walls of water but now I just get out of there if it gets too uncomfortable, there ain't no fish in the world worth drowning for.
Keep you eye on the weather and you will be fine and should become a competent boatman.

was out in lough currane today and i must say it got rather choppy making it very uncomfortable fishing
today i was lucky because we had a gillie but we made a bad decision last season and went out and ended up stuck on rocks in a gale force wind
dont go out in future if your in doubt its not worth it

In the end I took my own advise and didn't go out. Instead I went to a small private lake near me. It's a fly only lake and you can only fish it from the shore.

I had a great day. I landed 6 trout, the biggest was over 6lb. I lost two big ones - one broked my 7lb leader and the other managed to spit out the fly after about 5 minutes play.

Right decesion made

Ray.
