Default Shorts on the Clyde ?

Its nearly summer time and I am looking forward to getting my shorts on.
The water temperature is rising so I can put away my chest waders and
boots.
They were too cumbersome-me being quite a large chap-after an hour or
two I was f***ed.
So its on with the shorts and sneakers----- freedom at last!
But is there anything to look out for ---- things that can bite you or
things that will stick on to you and suck your blood.
This is only my second year up here in Scotland,I did wear shorts once on
the river last year with no problem but I may have been lucky.
What do you think ?

watch out for ticks when your on dry land ,can give you lymes disease if you dont remove the ticks properly with a special tool and treat the removal with some antiseptic cream ..

in the water you may encounter some small leeches but they pose no direct health threat

Thats how I used to fish in my younger days on the Clyde & the Avon for years before I could afford to buy a proper pair of waders, wellingtons were of no good as I always went over so training shoes & shorts were the order of the day, and apart from the odd tick here & there it caused me no harm at all. As Bruce says make sure you remove it properly and cover it with some sort of antiseptic such as TCP.

Shorts - Don't fish near Hamilton, Blantyre or Larkhall or you risk getting a kicking.

Sneakers - Once the algae comes on you will be able to skate from pool to pool.

other than that...go for it.

Used to fish the river of my birth, in East Lothian,(tyne) like that, during summer months.
Only misdemeanour that happened to me was a piece of corrugated iron, that got me on knee cap! Twenty stitches later i was back out again one week later!
Dont worry about ticks, you are just as likely to get them when fully clothed!
They cant live under water!!!
Same applies to the rat pee!!
Just dont waddle up to main road!
Lorry drivers might get distracted from their books!
regards

Rather than the shorts and trainers idea there are things you can wear that are like tights - couple them with a decent pair of wading shoes and you will be sorted against the beasties.

I would advise against trainers as they will provide no support when wading on boulders and other rocky bits. Or get some neoprene booties and wear your usual boots!
