Default Hats

Why do/did flyfishers stick flies in their hats?
Was it for show or was it so that they could use the fly again.
Ive stuck flies in my clothing thinking I am going to use it again that day
but I can never get it out.
Were the hats made of a special material ?------------- Just wondered

I used to have a strip of foam on either side of my hat to put flies to dry and to have ease of access to if I wanted a quick change during the day. Since I started wearing my baseball cap I only stick my flies on the patches on my waistcoat.

If you want to re-use a fly after sticking it in a hat or any other clothing. Simply de-barb the fly and it can be re-used over and over again

Laziness on my part, if I'm honest. Also if its pi**ing down, I wouldn't open my nice dry box of flies just to get them all soaked sticking a couple of flies back in again.

Thats my excuse, sorry reason

Watched my first dvd of Oliver Edward's wet fly fishing.
Looks like he not only has some of his flies in his hat but tippets and leaders wrapped round it as well.
Excellent dvd by the way.
