Default Mackerel!! But seriously does this happen often??

So, Although ive fly fished from been a small kid, ive never really been what you would call up to date with modern techniques.
Ive never needed to, whether fishing a welsh sea trout stream, a scottish salmon river or my local reservoir its always been a case of pick a fly line, knot the end, loop a relevent strengh piece of mono, fasten to the fly line, decide on a lengh of cast then tie a fly on the end. Critisise if you want but it works or me.

Well, down my local resevoir last week I decided lets give this "doing things properly" a go so i decided id try a 3 fly setup. The fish were well down so i used my fast sinking line a 9 foot cast with a booby on the point. I used the same knot i use when making peternostersters up for hooks when sea fishing and added a small fritz blob 3 foot from the booby and mini dog knobbler another 3 foot from the fritz.

My thinking was the booby would fish further up the fritz down a bit and the knobbler on the bottom nearly.

Well long story short after a few knots and tangles and an hour with nothing something hit a lure but oddly my rod was arched like a big fish but was jiggling about like a small rainbow. After a tussel I realised I had 2 fish on, one on the fritz and one on the knobbler and the dayglo booby was floating about on the surface of the water as i played the 2 fish. To complete this as i went to net the 1st rainbow a small perch of about 4 ounze popped up and grabbed the booby from the surface of the water to complete the full house!!

I managed to land all 3 fish a rainbow of just over a pound, one of just under pound and a 4 ounze perch lol.

So does it happen often when fishing with more than one fly that 2 or more fish hit the flies?

i've double hooked a few fish in my time but never treble hooked before. if two trout are close together and spot the flies at the same time, my guess is they take a first in gets fed approach, and go for the nearest fly to them.

hooking them is one thing, netting them is the difficult part. if there's somebody close by, i usually ask them to lend a hand (and their net). this stops the first fish getting overstressed whilst trying to net the second.

by the way, real mackrel will readily take a fly as well

About 7 or 8 years ago i went on a fishing holiday in wales and we was fishing off a rock face into the sea,

using beach caster rods and big pit reels casting out 7 ounce leads with 4 dropper hooks with feathers on after catching plenty of fish my dad said we should go soon, 10 last casts later ,

he hooked into what he thought was 2 or 3 fish he actually hooked into 4 fish and somehow he had a 5th on which had swallowed the lead and come out the other side of its gills so just shows u what can happen.

I was on Swanswater in Stirling once, using a hothead Damsel on the point and a JC Viva on the dropper, when a beast of a naturalised rainbow took the damsel. It was a stupendous fish, grown on, with a tail like a shovel and the energy of a diesel locomotive. It hared along the dam, getting me into the backing almost straight away (I hooked it on the first pull of a full-length cast, so was already close), and then up the far shore. We were in the boat so couldn't follow easily, as we were double-anchored at the time. The fish had got a good 100 yards away when suddenly it seemed to lose all power and come easily- too easily. I reeled in all that line to find a brownie of about 3/4 of a pound hooked firmly on the Viva- and no monster rainbow. No point fly at all. The entire lower section of the leader was gone, the brown having provided enough resistance for the 'bow to snap off. The word "gutted" doesn't even begin to describe that feeling...

Several people got a clear look at that fish as it passed them, and estimates ranged from 16lb to 20lb. And it was no flabby stockie...

Had loads of double hook ups as well, but never a triple.

My old mate Robert had a strange "double" once though.
While he was playing a nice brownie hooked on the point fly, a swallow took his top dropper fair and square in the mouth!!!!
The swallow was released after being dried out, and the brownie went into the smoker!

I have hooked up and almost landed 3 fat stockies in Hanningfield but the big one on the point eventually came adrift as I had 4-5' between each diawl Bach

landing all 3 is a great achievement - well done!

I had a double hook up of two double figure fish at Arnfield this season. Ended up with no fish, no flies and no leader, just a straggly bit of mono blowing in the wind.

Had loads of double hook ups to the boat and a good few triple hook ups , this includes all stockies and the same time , all wild fish at the same time and also a mix of the 2 at the same time . Had a double today on dry sedges , fish of 3/4 lb and 1.5 lb .......

Have got used to landing them now , I just land the top one , put the rod down and then grab the line and just pull up the next one and scoop it into the net .

Doesn't only happen with trout either ..........
