Spooling a fly line is best achieved as a two man ( willing partner ) job. Don't Rio's come spooled on a plastic 'drum'? I thought they did ... and if so, stick a pencil through the convenient hole in the middle, get someone to hold the pencil and off you go.

If the line is packaged on its own, ie just coils of line ... simply slip the coils over a rolled newspaper / cardboard tube or similar and get someone to hold either end of the newspaper.

If you try to spool the line by unravelling the coils or by reeling it straight from coils lying on the floor etc .... nightmare, tangles and twist ... don't do it!

Attaching the leader ... I'd use either loop to loop, cut it off and fit a Roman Moser mini con or nail knot the butt end of a tapered leader ( I use between 4 and 6ft of a tapered leader ending with a tippet ring) . For varying situations I use all of these arrangements.

If the line is on a plastic carrier spool, Lighthouse has the best way.

If the line came just coiled and not on a carrier, it's really tricky to get it on the spool without having a hopeless amount of twist in the line which creates endless hassles.

I'm sure there are many ways of doing this, but what I've done is to go out in the driveway or in the back garden, etc and lay out the whole line so it lays perfectly flat. Pay attention to which end is the head end if it's a WF so you don't get the wrong end on the spool first.

If the line stands up revealing a coil, that means there's twist in it, so untwist it until it lies perfectly flat. Then carefully wind it onto the reel, letting the head end roll freely to remove any remaining twist.

Re the loop, there are many opinions on the loop connectors. The only one that really matters is your own. I'd say try it.

Personally, I use the good old nail or nail-less knot because I like something that goes through the guides easily, but that's just me. YMMV.

Loop to Loop would be best imo.

Definately loop to loop to the backing, then to remove twist, lay the whole line out on long grass and take it for a walk, then wind it on to your reel, paying the line out on water will have the same effect.

Default lines

I find the best way to make sure you have no twists in your fly line is as follows: when your line is spooled on to your reel and you've let it tangle up when spooling get it on to your spool then tie on a short section of leader material of any type then tie on a small swivel used by or bait brothers then fix the swivel to a barb on barbed wire fence then pull out all your line to the backing and stretch the line and all the twists will come out and you have gave your line a stretch then spool it back on job done. It has always worked a treat for me when i have fitted lines that have come in a bag like Pitsford Pirates lines etc. I also do this as part of my regular mantainance for my lines.
