Default Upstream Spider With A Cheeky Little Nymph

Hello all i am looking for a good set-up for fishing upstream spiders but with a small nymph on the point sometimes when i want to cover lower in the water aswell .l have watched Oliver Edwards DVD using his fairly short line approach.I have just started trying out furled leaders after buying a few from mrtrout.I have been using them fishing spiders downstream with a nymph on the point & finding them quite easy to use.So i was thinking they might be good in the upstream approach especially if i colour & float the furled leaders tip & use as an indicator. Would this be a good approach to try out or can someone suggest another they use that works well .I could use a klinkhammer but sometimes i just don't want a klink. Cheers

Sounds to me like you're looking at basically a shallow water upstream nymph set up. Steven's furled leaders will work a treat, but I have to be honest and say that I usually use copolymer straight through, or sometimes a tapered butt section in between just to distance the top dropper from the fly line tip....

Hi Rab,

I like up-stream spider fishing! And apart from Dry Fly fishing - spiders up-stream is my second favourite! My set up for upstream spider fishing is : two droppers and a point fly - the point fly would be a weighted spider pattern or a nymph, or even a GRHE bead head, I don't use a marker or indicator for this method! And you do miss lots of fish; but it can be very exciting fishing. I cast the spiders up-stream two or sometimes three rod lengths of line in to pockets of riffly or fast moving water, I then immediately lift the rod tip as the spiders drift back towards me! Any sudden movement in the line - a twitch, a stop or sometimes you'll see the line move away from you! If this happens - complete the rod lift and hopefully fish on? Fun fishing; and you'll soon get used to watching the end of your fly line, also the sensitivity needed to retrieve the line quickly! give it a try! You'll love it once you've mastered it!

I think i am leaning more towards copolymer as i think it might be easier to lift of the water than a furled leader when you want your flies to hold in eddies. I am not sure if furled leaders get affected by currents & drag more than copolymer leaders. I have also made a floating braid indicator similar to what a lot of people use when French Nymphing to try .Hopefully we will get some rain soon so i can try out a few things.. Cheers
