Default A little bit of cheeky research

Guys,

I'm just in the first stages of setting up a partnership with a famous but reasonably priced beat on The Itchen to offer lessons. Now I'm not touting for business on this thread , but I am wondering about the feasibility of offering a one day course for stillwater anglers to help them convert to river fishing, so dealing with drag, angle changes, roll casts, weighted flies, rivercraft, that sort of thing. In reality it will mostly be confidence building/hand holding just to help people with the changes of approach to get them confident enough to do it themselves. Do you think a course of this type would generally appeal to stillwater anglers for £230-£260 all in? I'd obviously love to do if for cheaper than this, so if anyone knows of a cheap river in Hampshire with easy access to both banks, good fishing and unrestricted casting let me know

Hmmm, depends what the fishing's costing as to whether £260 is good value. To charge £100 on top of the fishing for a full day is OK, imo. I think your scheme could appeal to those looking to try river fishing, or to brush up their technique, so i'd offer a beginner and an improver's course. I'm not sure i'd aim it at 'converting' the stillwater angler, who may already know and use angle changes, roll casts and wil certainly know about weighted flies, but instead offer it as a MOT on your casting style with a bit of rivercraft thrown in.

It'll be one to one as and when a client asks, I wouldn't offer a multiple attendee course as the logistics would be a pig.

Basically yes, £100 on top of the fishing. In my experience of stillwater tuition, very few know roll casts, about 5%, and casting with large angle changes because of a current even fewer, hence why I'm thinking about the course.

On the face of it you are going to be at a considerable disadvantage compared to someone like Sportfish. They advertise something similar sub £200 if I remember correctly.

True, but that's for a group of four, not one to one, and is on a section of the Test that's nowhere near the quality or variety of water of the beat I've got access to on the Itchen. If four people want to do it, then I can do it for £160 per person.

If I ever have any Anglers wishing to fish your part of the World I will, without hesitation send them your way. With the confidence that they will be afforded some of the best Tuition/Guiding in Britain.
I have no affiliation with Darren but what I do have is respect for someone, who in the present climate is willing to take chances.
Good luck wth your new venture

Brian
