Default Buzzer help please

Evening all,

I'm after a bit of advice please. I think there was a thread about how to fish buzzers successfully. The only I can find is the one about fishing them without a bung. Can't find another relevant one though.

So, here goes....

I have some of those fishpimp things. They slide onto the leader and you use the rubber insert to hold it in place. Will it actually not fly off on the cast? Presumably you set them what ever depth until you hit the fish. Once you've cast, do you retrieve and if so how? I'm assuming slowly. How do you keep enough tension in the line to strike successfully?

Now I know some people think this isn't proper fly fishing but I want to just broaden my horizons and be able to adapt according to the day I'm having and the conditions. So, if anyone can offer me some advice or point me in the direction of the thread I've been hunting, I'd be grateful.

Thank you!

Andy

Hi Andy, personaly I am not too keen on the fish pimp indicators because they do most off the time fly off on the cast my advice would be get some flourescent coloured cork balls slide them on the line and put a matchstick through to hold it in place. And when fishing I find buzzers are best fished static. Hope this helps.

morayflyfisher sells some good bungs. Turn-on strike indicators are also good. start by fishing a single buzzer about a foot under then gradually increase deapth about 6" a cast. when your up to 6', add a dropper half way.
In time you can move the indicator to the top of your leader..... just drift and watch for takes.
The most fun youl have though is when the indicator is off alltogether though, much more satisfying I think.
BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
On its day a single buzzer fished static and vertical under a bung is hard to beat.

As far as fishing buzzer static , i put movement into it unless theres a decent wind bobbing the indicator up and down , that gives the buzzers movement especially an apps bloodworm, ive often had fish on retrieve and not static dont forget buzzers move and yes those pimps will come off all the bloody time unless on a thick line and fish too seem to like them

I'd give the fish pimps a miss too, they come off far too easy. The turn-on type given two or three twists ( you'll know what i mean when you see them) stay on and stay where you set them.

I like to give them a long slow pull every now and then to raise the buzzers up the water and then let them drop, you get a lot of takes just as moving one way or the other, that's what the natural ones are doing, they're always heading for the surface and changing their minds and going back down....

But you will get the odd one that nails the indicator, give a quick long pull to get the top dropper where the bung was and they often turn and take it though or tie up a deer hair ball in whatever colour you fancy, then you have an indicator with a hook, but not so easy to adjust depth, so start with bung find the right depth then swap if they are attracted to the bung a lot.

........ or just dead slow figure of eight with no bung at all.....also good on its day

When I use an indicator I use thingamabobbers which are small air filled balls. They attach easily to your leader and don't offer resistance when you are casting. I tend to only use indicators when its calm, when theres some breeze, find a bank with a side wind (which side depends on which arm you cast with), set up a leader of about 18 feet with 2 droppers and cast across and slightly down wind. Let the breeze fish the flies round for you and only retrieve line to keep in touch i.e pick up any slack line. I like to use a size 12 naiad buzzer on the point, a size 14 on the middle dropper with a diawl bach on the top dropper. If the breeze is bringing the flies round too fast, you could use a goldhead buzzer on the point, but also try putting mends in the line to allow the flies to sink down deeper. Takes when "straight lining" your buzzers this way can be savage so hold on!!

Cheers

Mat

Was it mine?

Buzzer Basics

Just had a quick search and there are quite a few similar questions, definitely going to have a read of them.

I have used the froghair ones which have worked well for me so far; they are easy to set up and change the dpeth etc. Although a bit pricey for what is essentially little pieces of polystyrene....!

Catching a bow on a buzzer is my next objective!
