Default cdc buzzers. How do you fish 'em?

Found some cdc buzzers in my fly box yesterday and decided that with a bit of surface activity it was time I gave them a go.

Tied the hook as usual, put some fullers earth on the line and cast out and was expecting the fly to hang just beneath the surface, suspended by the cdc. However it sunk straight away. As I was on a time scale that was rapidly expiring I only tried it a couple of more times with the same result and then had to go. I usually persevere with things until I work them out myself, but if someone can point me in the right direction to save me time next opportunity I get to give it a whirl, it would be much appreciated.

You didn't mention if you "ginked" the CDC, if so that's why it might have sank...No need to put any silicone treatment on CDC.

Just a thought.

Fluorocarbon leader? May be to heavy for the fly to support.

Is there enough CDC in the fly?.... if so, dry the wing using amadou or similar .. i use Birch Bracket fungus... Then apply a little gink floatant... make sure its all melted and apply sparingly... To fish em I only use a single fly.... I taper the leader from 32lbs (4ft) 20lbs (3ft) 15lbs (3ft) ish.... . then attach my leader to fly material... 4lbs clear mono.... 5ft (ish)?... Cast out n give the line a quick pull to sink the leader.... i like to hold my rod pointing up to say 10 o clock... I'm then 'triggered' n ready to lift into any take... Use some Muscilin on the front 6ft - 8ft of your floating line...

I must try that tapered leader set up you use Martin.
Co poly leader for me when on the dries, set up depends on size of water.
Sounds like your flies don't have enough CDC in them to support em.

Cheers Craig

Default cdc

As most of the guys have said ,some shop bought cdc,s are on far too heavy hooks for the amount of cdc tied on them ,copolymer the way to go,have a look at the flytying section and look at some of the cdc flies and you will see what they should look like

Make sure its 'stiffish' material n just 2 turn water knot em together.... last bit tye an overhand loop and 'loop to loop' your business end ... turns over a treat every time...

Thanks for the replies chaps, I think I may have over applied the fullers earth too near the business end, never ginked it up and was using shop bought nylon leader. Will take onboard the leader recomendations and make a couple up in copolymer. Probably fill the bath up and see if they work, just to confirm the missus view that I am totally barmy
