Default National Trust Waters

Do you need a permit to fish on National Trust Waters? And what if you are a member of the National Trust?

At the company I work for they once had National Trust rep there giving people info and getting sign ups. I asked a question about fishing to this rep but they didn't have any info on it and weren't able to find anything in their booklets etc.

So does anyone know the deal?

I am a NT member and when i asked about Mottisfont they told me it was syndicate. That was a few years ago but i would ask at the place you are visiting as they are all different. I am also going to fish the Lyn which is NT at watersmeet I think i get the Day ticket from the visitors centre. Where are you thinking of fishing?

I didn't have anywhere particular in mind but I know there are quite a few bits of land the NT owns that have some nice streams/rivers and lakes. One example would be at Wastdale Head there's Lingmell Beck etc and a few other streams and bits of water that hold small fish... Seen as Wastwater is off limits I am wondering about the small streams and rivers running into it on NT land? There's plenty of other places on NT land as well I know its free fishing such as some tarns higher up. I was just wondering if they have a list of all the places you can fish freely and whether you need to be a member or not to do so given the NT's status?

Regarding Wastwater, I think it's one of those grey areas, people say it's no fishing but finding that information for yourself is difficult, to my knowledge there is no signs around the water informing people there is no fishing.

After pursuing this for a while with no real conclusion my Dad decided to go and fish, figuring if there really is no fishing allowed someone would show up at some point and advise him accordingly - this was about 8 years ago if I remember correctly, he and his mate fish it about 6 times a year and have never been challenged, they fish along the road side and as far as I can remember have never failed to catch trout.
They are both bait anglers but return everything and have both said that Wastwater trout fight harder than any others they have caught in the lake district. In fact I was only last night looking at pictures of several trout up to 1 3/4 lb.

I also used to know some guys who did a lot of spinning along the scree side of the lake, these guys were good anglers but complete murderers, I have seen some stonking fish on their kitcken counters (up to 8 lb), similarly these guys have never been challenged, i'm not in touch with them any more but believe they still fish wastwater.

I believe Crummock, Buttermere & Loweswater are NT waters and these can definetely be fished on a day ticket, boats are available on Loweswater & Crummock. Crummock and Buttermere are better trout waters than Loweswater, Loweswater is more a Pike and Perch water IMO. The shoals of perch are enormous with an excellent stamp of fish, I've had Pike to 19lb from Loweswater and believe fish over 30lb have been caught in recent years.

A few years ago the NT did issue a booklet outlining available fishing on their sites. Not a great deal I seem to remember and much is controlled by local fishing clubs and syndicates.

Cheers

I used to fish the river at Erddig nr Wrexham as a kid and never got any grief, we even met the EA guys down there checking fishing licences and they never mentioned we should not be there. Have not been since as like mentioned above not to sure if it’s ok or not and could never find any info but you don’t seem to care when you’re a kid.
