Plenty around at Ellerdine Lakes on Sunday, but the trout haven't switched on to them yet. Planning a trip to the Dove next week so hope to see vast numbers of the ungainly beasts.

The hawthorn fly, posh name Bibio marci is also sometimes called St. Marks’s fly because it traditionally makes an appearance around April 25, St. Mark’s day.

Other than a specific imitation, what other flies work? Hoppers?

I am about to have a go at tying something for the hawthorn's appearance.
From what I understand nice big legs/fat body are a major trigger, so that's what I'm going to go for !
That's if I can ever get the hang of knotting pheasant fibres!!

Which is only 3 days away. Even then this terrestial is unlikely to show on the water for another week.

In a fortnight the hawthorn should be everywhere.

They are definitely my favourite fly.

Well, what do ya know, I just received 20 of them off Mr Scratch, complete with nice oak stand.
So how do they double as a leg knotter?
