Default Advice on Tweed Fishing

Although I live in the south of England, my in-laws live in a village just outside Melrose, Scotland. Seeing people fishing on the River Tweed during my visits has re-ignited by desire to get back into fly fishing.

I have not been fly fishing for about 15/ 20 years and have sold all my equipment, with the exception of a Hardy reel and fly case that my Grandad gave me.

What would be the best way to get into fishing of the Tweed/ Teviot ?

I would like some formal lessons/ guiding so does anybody have any recommendations.

Also heading off too Lochgoilhead in August so any advice on what the fishing is like there would be appreciated.

I'm new to salmon fishing and fished at Tweedswood last week (lost one - ahhh) and would recommend a day or two with Kevin the ghillie / boatman. He is a great instructor and works hard to put you on the fish.

Welcome to Tweedswood

Permits for Tweed, Teviot and all the other border waters are available to purchase in any tackle shop in the Scottish borders. The Post Offices also sell them and some newsagents.

You don't say what time of year you will be visiting? You can have days fishing for wild brown trout for as little as £5.00. Salmon fishing is a wee bit more expensive......

Why not get some casting lessons before the trip, and enjoy the freedom of fishing the border rivers when you get here?

The Melrose area is very good, but If you need more information on exactly where to fish or the tackle and flies to use, feel free to ask.

Look at this link for tweed fishing.

FishPal - Scotland - Tweed - About The Tweed

Most of the beats that have access for fishing are listed there.
As David said lessons will be invaluable, especially if salmon fishing is your ultimate target.

As to the second destination, Loch goil is sea loch so different species and tackle required if fishing loch.
Only one small spate river enters river at head of loch, holds salmon and sea trout, when in spate, permits available at post office/grocery store in village.

Don't want to hijack your thread Powerkiter, but I'd also be interested in any pointers on The Tweed and Teviot. A couple of forum members and I have booked a cottage just outside Melrose for a week in June and plan to fish every day for browns and grayling. None of us have fished there before.

The map on the Fish Tweed website is useful. The nearest clubs on The Tweed seem to be St Boswells, Melrose and District and Gala AA.

Melrose and District doesn't seem to have a website, and not sure what the score is. Would like to know if the Tweed at Newstead is fishable on day ticket as that's where the cottage is.

Any local knowledge would be appreciated, especially which bits of river we're best heading to for trout and grayling. Whilst up there we also want to fish The Teviot and perhaps some of the Tweed's tribs.

Thanks
Kev

Kev,

You can contact Tom Mcleish the Melrose AA Secretary. Tel 01896 822232 for permits and info on fishing the Melrose area including Newstead.

Permits are also available in the town from the newsagent and the petrol station.

ALL of the Tweed has good Trout and Grayling fishing. At this time of year the March Brown and Dark Olive hatches can be very prolific.

As you get into May the Dark Olive, Grannom and Blue Winged Olive hatches get going. From June on the evening is the best time to be on the water for the hatching Sedges of different types, you will also see good hatches of BWO, Pale Watery Olive's, Yellow May Dun and more.... Have fun.

Tom will give you good advice. He is a very good trout fisherman and knows that area of the Tweed very well. He has lived on the banks of the Tweed and fished it for most of his life.
