Default #6 Line on a #5 rod ????

I have a Sage 9' Zaxis 4 piece #5 and I'm looking to use this rod mainly for dry flies on a lake. I'm looking to get a good floating line for this purpose. Someone suggested that I get a WF #6 line.

It this a good idea or not? What is the best line to get for dry flies on a large lake?

Thanks In advance.

Regards,

Ray.

Uplining is usually best for rivers to load the rod quicker for shorter casts. A 6 weight might overload it slightly on the longer casts

I have a pair of XPs which I use for still water.

I always overline them by #1 and they "go" much better for me..if you are a fairly indifferent caster you can feel an overweight line much better.

I'm with Rookstorm on this one. I fish a few Sage rods and find they perform very well with the correct line rating teamed up with them.

As for dry flies, I'd get a line with a good presentation front taper (Partridge Dry and Delicate used to be my preferred but you can't get them anymore).

The Sage TCR #5 is the only rod I upline by 1 as the rest are just fine with the stated line rating.

Yep............you can overload the rod too much on a long cast particularly with a haul incorporated. Very useful for short casts as has already been said............................birdsnest

I also have the z-axis 5 weight and it perform`s better with a 5 weight line on it, in my opinion.I have tried it with a 6 weight and it is definately overloaded. After many recomendation`s I opted for a Barrio line and for £19 I am well happy with how it fishes.

Thank you all for your help so far. It would appear that the best option is not to upline and stick with a #5 line.

Ray

Dear Ray ,

As a rating specialist I'll cheerfully tell you to try one AFTM High and One Low as well as what is marked on the rod .
If it feels soggy its too heavy for it and if your arm is having to do the work - its too light .

This isn't about what's written on the stick - its what works best for you !!

(And interesting mistakes can happen even in the best regulated operations ) there was once a batch of 100 Bob Church 10' AFTM 9#'s that somebody accidentally made out of Mk IV Carp Blanks - Bob lived on his nerves for months after - never came there back a twitter - which I found odd because they were minimally AFTM13# sticks by my very conservative reckoning !

I bet the poor souls who bought them daredn't admit that they were the wimps the rods made them out to be ( as it were ! )

Best wishes and believe nobody ! Especially Gordon !!
