Default Lamiglas fly rods

Does anyone still own one of these US rods? I seem to remember they were good rods a long while ago.
How does it compare with today's rods in terms of performance etc.?

Lamiglas is still in business, although these days they are far better known for their heavy salmon and trolling rods. Their trolling rods in particular are considered in the top tier and are very popular in the PNW and Canada.

I would say that they are not as well known for their current fly rod offerings and it's very rare to hear their fly rods mentioned over here in the US. The name is probably somewhat confusing because I'm sure it leads some assume they still only make fiberglass rods, which is not the case.

When you ask does anyone still own a Lamiglas, are you referring to a fiberglass version or a more recent carbon fiber version?

Older Lamiglas rods in fiberglass in the lighter line weights are highly sought after. Many consider these rods to be the Cadillac of spring creek rods because they load easily in close quarters.

They were graphite rods at the time and had sweet actions. I seem to remember I had an 8ft for # 4/5.

Do you have a website for Lamiglas in the US

Lamiglas

Looks like they're having some issues with their website, but it's still functional if you scroll past all the error message rubbish.

Are the Lamiglas fly rods you are enquiring about the type with the unusual joint? It was not unlike a traditional cane rod ferrule, but made in carbon. The top joint fitted into a carbon sleeve bonded to the adjoining section.

They were good blanks for the time. Low modulus carbon. Slow in recovery and action. Heavy in direct comparison with todays lightweight higher modulus fast recovery carbon fibre fly rods.

Several people in the trade and who should know of which they speak, have mentioned to me that Lamiglas are now owned by Daiwa.

These same people are of the opinion that the now discontinued Lochmor Z range of fly rods were in fact built upon Lamiglas blanks. I have always liked Lamiglas rods and have always found the Lochmor Z rods to be sweet and very useable so two plus two may indeed make four in this case

The Lamiglas 'glass' blanks were indeed excellent, a very attractive transluscent grey - I built quite a few of them. I've still got one of the carbom fibre rods I built up - I think it's 10ft, 7/8 - and as David N says, in weight and action they simply don't compare with 'modern' rods.

Just a pointer to think about with regard to lamiglass,in the 70s it was a certain Gary Loomis who worked for lamiglass who helped develope the graphite fibre and resin which was at the forefront of todays rods,he wasnt the only company mind you,i believe that it was Don Green and Fenwick who started the ball rolling etc.
Lamiglass blanks are still held in very high esteem by rodbuilders around the world, and are still up there amongst the best, however ,for me they (lamiglass)were still at the forefront of graphite design (designing the right prepreg cloth)with Gary Loomis which led to the imx, rpl, type blanks we were treat to in the 80s.

In the 70's I built a fair few hundred for Tom Saville who was the then main importer .

The 10' 6#/7# 's were excellent bank reservoir rods at the time and I surely fished a pair for five odd years until I went in with Shakespeare - spigots interesting and they didn't go to overfit nearly as soon as they should have which probably cost them a lot of market share .

But then and again - neither did Orvis .

I still see a few coming in for refinishing.

My , how I hated whipping with that damned Astral Thread ( with lurex in it ) that Tommy Saville had me use!

Best wishes

Steve P

And on a point of info it was Shakespeare's US Columbia Plant that produced the first mainstream carbon ( and ultimately boron) rods with their President Range ( and I still see an occasional one of them every couple of years or so !)
