Default River almond edinburgh

Does anyone know who owns the fishing rights and if you need a permit on the river almond from cliftonhall upwards (newbridge area) around were the canal passes overhead. Went up on friday to try river fishing for the first time with my new rod and managed 4 little browns on a dry fly (one of which looked like a salmon par) but was a bit para because i couldnt find any information on permits etc. I looked on the cramond angling site but i dont think their permit covers fishing this far up river.

New rod is a guideline fario 8ft 4wt which seemed amazing to me but only fished for a year and first time fishing rivers so didnt realy know what line to match it with so bought a snowbee xs delicate presantation and seems to work mint.

Any info would be greatly appreicated thanks again.

Good question The simple answer is no one currently "controls" that part of the Almond. Your highly unlikely to get stopped from trout fishing but there is an outside chance you might get "questioned" by the forth district salmon board baliffis if they think your salmon fishing. It's a nice bit of water to learn about river fishing

At that part of the river you were fishing in the Almondell country park where the byelaws state (and I paraphrase), "it is an offence to take, disturb or harm any bird, beast or FISH".

That being said it is very, very unlikely that any country park ranger will approach you.

There is no fishing club above the Cramond AC stretch although some moves were afoot about a year ago to form one. One problem that has appeared and is getting worse is the usual Eastern Europeans fishing illegally and killing everything that they hook. Some were arrested by the Forth Rivers Authority bailiffs during the close season for being in possession of trout out of season. There are local, but unconfirmed, rumours that netting has been taking place.

Sadly this is what happens on uncontrolled rivers near centres of population and there is no solution in sight.
