Default Unsolicited opinions

Wanting a new flyline of a particular brand, model and line weight, I made the mistake today of calling Sportfish at Reading. I simply wanted to find out if they had the particular line in stock. What I got was the sales urchins private opinion stating that according to him, not knowing anything about the exact rod, casting style or type of fishing I do and with no regard to my personal preference, that another product would be far better for me.
Why is it, because this ain't the first time, that when you call that wretched company you always get someone who thinks he knows better than the rest of us? They'd do better to simply listen to what the customer has to say and stick their unsolicited opinions where the sun doesn't ....!

Personally, I think the Sharkskin WF7 at £70 would suit you better as everyone knows that with a fast action rod, you always go up a line weight and the more expensive the line - the better it is

Why would you bother with Sportfish when we have our own Pitsford Pirate?

You're not far wrong. They weren't trying to sell me a mill end that's for sure.

I buy things from sportfish and I have found them an excellent bunch. They are always more than helpful when I visit their Reading shop.

Must admit I don't by any lines off them (PP) but as I have a client virtually next door I like popping in for some browsing.

Sorry but I do not believe a word of this. Sportfish are a fine company do deal with.

Hard to bame the shop staff for trying to sell you something. I mean, after all, it is their job if you think about it.

You have a point in that the staff obviously don't have your needs as their first concern and they often substitute their subjective opinions, but again I think there's another way to look at that.

Namely, the average angler has little or no idea (in concrete and objective terms) what they want or why they want it. They buy based on name brand or based on what their friends said was "the best".

So taking into account the average customer just comes in and either says I need "a good line" or says "Give me the MondoDistanceXXXL because my mate says it's the best," you can hardly blame the staff for trying to sell you what they actually carry in stock.

Beyond that, most anglers haven't got a clue. The amount of experience one needs to start factoring in the specifics you mentioned (related to choosing a line) only come from a level of experience that's way beyond the level of the average angler. People in shops see very, very few of these customers so it's hardly a surprise that they don't know how to handle them.
