Here's what I do when my fly lines get a bit tangled. (Do this on Grass)
Firstly attach a reel & line to a rod butt & thread the line through the rings. Now attach a braided loop if your line doesn't have one & fix it into the grass with a scewer or similar & walk the line off the reel until the backing knot is exposed & detatch the line from the backing. Now I use a cleaning pad & run it along the line from the tethered end back. Beacause the line's fixed to the ground through the scewer, all the twisted are transmitted up the line & off the free end. Now give it a REALLY good stretch & leave it for at least 10 minutes before re-attaching to the backing & winding back on the reel.
I usually do this about every 10 times I use a line & it really helps to reduce line kinking quite a bit & seems to extend the useful life of the line.

hope this helps mate

How did you transfer your line from reel to reel?
By the sounds of it the line has got twisted.
If you can trawl your line behind a boat,I
here this can straighten lines out.

better still attatch it to a large swivel fastened to a gatepost or something pull the line out ,the swivel will elimimate all twists then stretch so much at a time... you must make sure that all twists are out otherwise if you stretch it with twist in thats it buggered

You have more than likely gotten the line twisted as has been suggested, especially so when you describe the way you have transferred the line from one reel to another, never do it this way.

Simply follow the advice you have been given to untwist, my preference is to get the line out the back of a boat whilst motoring, or use the swivel & post method.

Also, when stripping line off the reel to get ready to cast, have a think about it, the running line on bottom of the reel is now lying on top of the front end, so when you go to cast, it will end up in a birds nest.

Try stripping it off one side of you, then starting with the running line end strip it from the ground to another spot beside you so now the front end is lying on top of the running line.

Simples.

Apart from the above - I often find that, on the odd time that my line gets tangled is because I havent prestretched it before casting or I have untidely dumped it on the bottom of the boat.

With the Pirates suggestion above - I typically strip my line off the reel then wet my hands before stretching it between my hands in the reverse direction so that the front of the line is now on top of the pile and hence little chance of a tangle on the way up through the rings.

Slightly obvious question.
but have you put it on back to front?
i.e you are trying to cast running line, not forward section?

Second dumb question: -
Where is the tangle? - on the reel, or of the line beyond the rod-tip?
