I fished the cairn for years, its an excellent salmon water but it does need a bit of water on it, the first run of salmon usually start June July but there has to be spates, sept Oct are the best, the sea trout run has been poor, most run the Nith, the Cairn is stocked with broonies in Early May, but these appear to be fished out pretty quick.
walking the river used be a lot better, but now its overgrown and can be hard going,
I used to catch my Salmon on the middle reaches, rather than the top, they are usually pretty coloured by the time they get up there.
Its a very wooded river, but there are places you can get in with the fly,
A 9ft or 10ft is all that's needed, it is not a wide river,
Most Anglers fish the worm.

Better move across valley to Annan then.
Big trout (wildies) and easy access to most beats, all of them 30 minutes to one hour from dumfries
FishPal - Scotland - Annan - Trout Fishing

details through above link.

I would agree, dont know if they stock the annan though, plenty of Lochs in the area, and some good stocked ones.
