Default Teams of flies

What are some good teams of flies either as a pair or a threesome
I mainly fish using buzzers and nymphs but have been known to occasionaly dabble with some lures, but would like to know if I am missing out by pairing any two or three flies together

One that worked well for me on eyebrook reservoir on Sunday was a wire woven cruncher on the point to get the flies down and then a diawl bach on the middle dropper and a small black buzzer on the top dropper.

I think the important thing is being ready to adapt and change the depth and size of flies that you fish at. It just happeened to be that i found most of the fish were feeding a good few feet down and therefore a long leader and weighted point fly enabled me to get down to them with the team. A few others were having success with intermediate lines but i ahd forgotten to bring mine lol.

Can I suggest you get hold of one or more of the Henry Lowe books, Coch y Bonndu sell them. There's some good advice about teams of flies and team tactics.

In general, only use more than one fly when you know that the fishery rules allow it (!) and you can explain to yourself the advantage you'll gain from doing so...which you often can. Then make the team do more than the sum of its parts. Fishing two depths with long leader, leaded fly on point, lighter one on a dropper; attractor and deceiver teamed together; and suggesting more than one insect within or stage of the likely hatch are all examples of team tactics that HL offers and that have worked for me.

Or how about 5 blobs of different colours I saw one youngster fishing last year.

I hope he blanked!

My favorite team for this time of year is:

Black and red emerger (top) - skinny olive (middle) - heavy red holographic buzzer on the point. Excellent cast if theres a nice little ripple on the water.

If its a bit blowy my first line of attack would be:

tungsten bead or wee double hummie (point) - claret dabbler (middle) - orange blob (top) - or mini cat on top if anyones watching!

Ron,

There are many possible reactions one could have had to this scenario - I think yours is the saddest.

I agree with Jeff on this scenario.

Remember there was a legitimate question asked by someone who wants to learn from more experienced members of the forum.

What do you think that this sort of answer portrays to people new to fishing, and to young members who are on this forum.

Remember we were all young at one time, and all needed help to learn how to fish.

This young lad may have appreciated some advice from you if you would have taken the time to talk to him and explained that they may have been a better way to approach the fishing that day; I know I would have been pleased for any advice from more experienced anglers when I was young (anything to help me catch a fish.)

However, to wish for someone not to catch: well I can’t believe you said that!!.

Let’s stop kicking the young as they will be looking after the future of fishing when were too old.

Sorry that I have not answered the original question but I needed to say my piece about the above remark. And that’s it.

Goodbye.

Dyl.

The short answer to that Mack is no mate, there is no magical combination of flies that always works,so my advice to you would be not to worry about whether you are missing out on anything.Keep an open mind and don't be afraid to try different combinations however illogical it may seem .
By doing this, you might just hit on exactly what the fish are looking for at that moment.

Flies are important but not as important as retrieve and/or depth in most cases.I would concentrate more of your efforts on that side of things rather than worrying too much about flies....

And Ron....I hope yer next shyte is a hedgehog. That comment about the youngster was ridiculous...

Ive been fishing a two fly cast this week on my local reservoiur as its been windy. A skinny black buzzer on the point and a lighter dubber black buzzer on the top dropper. The area I was fishing was quite shallow, if it was deeper I would have used three flies, a superglue buzzer on the point and then the skinny buzzer and the dubbed buzzer on the top dropper.

What I clearly noticed was that the first three fish were on the point and then as the fish came up in the water the next three were on the dropper. I think the key is using a cast which covers the depths until you find the fish.
